Why Quotes Can Help

There are days when confidence feels a million miles away, your motivation just ups and leaves, and your inner critic is louder than ever. On these kind of days, I try to reset my mind and coax myself into a better mood through journaling, listening to podcasts, and saying or writing words that ground me, and quieten the doubt.

Words really can have a significant impact on your mood and focus. Just think of a song that means so much to you, and how it can change your mood and feelings in an instant. The melody and the words move you, because you can relate to them, or you take meaning from them.

Many people find comfort in words, and this is why quotes are so often used to express emotions and make sense of how you're currently feeling.

Why Mel Robbins?

Mel Robbins is one of my go-to’s for helping me cut through the crap and get my mind back to where I want it to be. There are many loud and popular speakers within the wellness industry, and as an experience therapist, I've always been a little cautious when following coaches / speakers “gurus” due to the massive influence they can have on people.

There's always a danger of misinformation being shared by those who aren't trained or who have little to none real experience within this multi-billion-dollar industry.

But, Mel is one of those people who is able to deliver sometimes quite complex information with clarity, and without fluff. It’s not toxic positivity, but through speaking with many, many professionals, Mel has been able to get her message out in simplistic terms with knowledge, kindness and understanding.

This makes it feel understandable and accessible to those who don’t have in-depth knowledge of psychology and human behaviour, or who can't afford to work 1-1 with a therapist or coach right now.

Mel often invites specialists within their fields to be guests on her podcast, where together they discuss and break down the theories and information on health, wellness, relationships, productivity, mental health and more. A lot of research goes into these shows, with information for listeners who wish to learn more or connect with the professionals themselves.

I have a number of her quotes written in my journal and in notes on my desktop – little reminders that even if it doesn't feel like it – I have got this, it’s okay and to keep going.

Below are 15 Mel Robbins Quotes that have helped me move forward with more trust in myself, and I hope they do the same for you!.

15 Mel Robbins Quotes:

“You are one decision away from a completely different life.”
Starting strong with this one! When we think of change it’s easy to think of wildly ambitious jumps forward. But, only one small step is all it takes to shift everything. It doesn’t have to be dramatic—it just needs to be different. For example, choosing to wake up 15 minutes earlier to journal / practice yoga / stretch / plan your day.

“There will always be someone who can’t see your worth. Don’t let it be you.”
Another strong one! Most of the time our biggest critic is ourselves. I read this when I was second-guessing everything. My health was playing up and I felt like I’d never be able to achieve my goals. Even though I’m a therapist myself, it's easy to be blind to our own subconscious thoughts and beliefs. These words reminded me that the opinion that matters the most is my own, and to nurture that inner voice..

“Confidence is the willingness to try.”
A great reminder. Confidence is something that many of us lack for one reason or another. In this quote, Mel reminds us that confidence isn’t about being the best or getting it right straight away – but through giving it a go. A great way to practice this when you’re feeling resistance towards doing something, is asking: “But what if it all works out?”

“No one is coming. It’s up to you.”
One of my favourite ones by far! As someone who can have a tendency to procrastinate and put things off (largely thanks to having a squirrel brain), these words were a great “oh shit!” moment for me. I’d been putting a few things off, playing around but not actually moving myself forward. Loved hearing this. I stopped waiting for the right moment, and took that first step.

“You’re not a procrastinator. You have a habit of procrastinating.”
As before, this is a great reminder. Labels can be helpful but at times labels can act as a little excuse in our brains. If you’re telling yourself often that “I am a procrastinator” it can become self fulfilling. But having the tendency to procrastinate doesn’t mean you’re incapable or lazy. You're a human who has developed habits – and habits can be changed.

“You don’t have to feel ready. You just have to start.”
Yes, yes, yes!! Waiting to feel ready is one of the biggest lies we tell ourselves over and over. When you base your motivation on feelings and emotions, you open yourself up to staying inside your comfort zone and never feeling ready to try. Action is what is needed – even the tiniest step is all it can take to spark momentum and build your confidence.

“You can’t control how you feel. But you can always choose how you act.”
If you’re finding it difficult at the moment, perhaps your energy is low, your confidence is wobbly or you’re terrified about needing to step up to do something; this quote is for you. You may feel scared, worried or anxious, but you can still choose to take that step forward.

“If you don't start doing the things you don't feel like doing, you will wake up one year from now in exactly the same place.”
I love this! If you have a goal you really want to achieve, you need to make changes to your current life and the actions you take. If you keep doing the same thing you’ve always been doing – nothing will change!

“Your feelings don’t matter. The only thing that matters is what you DO.”
Your actions are what dictates whether or not you will achieve your goals. Find a way of working that helps you switch off the emotion and focus 100% on what you’re doing in that moment. The Pomodoro Technique is a great way to push through these blocks. You work for a specific amount of time (15 – 30 minutes), then stop and take a break. You repeat this throughout the day. I’ve found that when I really do not want to work – these micro-focused sessions help me ignore those feelings.

“Forget motivation. It’s a myth.”
Sometimes we have to move before we feel like moving. Basing your output on how you’re feeling can keep you stuck in avoidance and waiting. Focus on taking consistent action – yes, even tiny steps. This builds momentum which then results in more motivation as you begin to see the results of the small steps adding up.

“Your mental health is everything – prioritize it. Make the time like your life depends on it, because it does”
Your mental health can and will dictate your life story, your happiness, purpose and satisfaction with life. When you choose to prioritise your own wellbeing, you are choosing to give yourself the best possible chance to live the life that you deserve.

“The problem isn’t your ideas. The problem is your doubt.”
Self-doubt can rob you of your dreams. How many times have you dismissed a dream before even trying? When you let doubt win you don’t even try, so you’re guaranteed to not succeed.

“You don’t need to believe in yourself. You need to take action and the belief will follow.”
A great reminder that confidence is something that you can grow and nurture. This has helped me to change how I show up, and how I approach new or challenging situations. I used to wait until I felt confident. Now I know that it’s the action that builds belief and self-confidence – not the other way around.

What ever happened to good enough?
Mel talks about how many of us are so focused on getting it right, on perfecting everything, instead of simply doing your best, being good enough. It’s a great way to ease pressure when you, and remove the fear of making mistakes.

Focusing on what you can’t control makes you stressed. Focusing on what you can control makes you powerful.”
I’m a huge fan of the circle of influence / circle of control. It’s a question that I ask myself, and something I say to my therapy clients. It’s such a powerful reminder to not get ourselves bogged down with things that we have no control over. Instead, focus on what you can control – for example, your reactions, your actions and your intentions.

Mel Robbins Quotes – My Reflections

I've loved writing this blog – and I hope you've enjoyed the 15 Mel Robbins Quotes as well!

Sometimes words aren't enough to support you or to make an impact on your mood or confidence, and during those times simply focusing on keeping yourself safe and well is key.

But if you're someone who finds comfort in the words of others, to know that you're not alone in what you're facing because others have been there too, then words can have a huge impact.

One of my favourite Mel Robbins Quotes is:

“All it takes is one moment of courage, one step forward, to change your life.”
